Runo Lagomarsino
ar/ge kunst – issue #09
The ninth issue of the fanzine produced by Mousse Publishing for ar/ge kunst is dedicated to the work of Runo Lagomarsino, on the occasion of his first solo show in Italy, “Violent Corners”, which focuses on the relationship between Europe's colonial past and the history of South America from the 16th century to the present. In the installation A Conquest Means Not Only Taking Over (II) (2010-11), the glyph of Francisco Pizarro’s signature, a symbol of Spanish colonial power, is turned into a cosily familiar decorative element. In Contratiempos (2009/10), colonialism, desire and exoticism converge in the reconstruction of a randomly produced yet accurate map of South America. The video The G in Modernity Stands for Ghosts (2009) metaphorically presents the Swedish artist’s leitmotifs: space, temporality, cartography and appropriation.
